As an aficionado of acoustic blues music, it's rare that I find an artist today who captures not only the sound I love, but also the true feel of that sound. Ben Powell is a modern artist, standing on the shoulders of giants, forging into the future, bottleneck slide in hand.
When I first heard the song "Away From Home," I thought it might have been a track from some old blues master I was unfamiliar with. Yet something about the voice, the lyrics and those fingers moving so deftly up and down the fretboard of the old resonator guitar told me he wasn't just emulating the masters. This is someone doing a balancing act on the tight rope between the past and the future.
Powell's songs are more contemporary, more urgent, but blues to the core.
