Grip is a solo exhibition by LA painter John Rosewall, whose acrylic paintings illustrate some of the ways people hold, or hold onto each other - be it a handshake, a pat on the back or a gesture of restraint. Each of the paintings are appropriated from public media with altered images of violence. Using muted colors, Rosewall reduces these horrific images to their formalistic essentials, elements. without context. Minus backgrounds or any recognizable imagery or facial features, each scene becomes a portion of a tableau of gesture and implied bodily relationships.
